The Bilingual International Baccalaureate (GIB) at the German International School Riyadh combines German educational standards with an internationally recognized school leaving certificate. As an Excellent German School Abroad, DISR offers a GIB profile with a high proportion of German instruction. Distinctive Feature at DISR:
 German, Biology, and History are taught entirely in German.
 This means DISR offers one of the nationally recognized GIB models with a strong German profile.

The GIB at DISR combines the strengths of two educational systems and specifically promotes academic multilingualism.

German is the language of instruction for German B, Biology, and History. English is used, among other subjects, in English A and in parts of the mathematics materials. Spanish is offered as an additional foreign language.

This deliberate linguistic structure enables students to operate confidently in both German-speaking and international academic environments, creating a solid foundation for studies in Germany and worldwide.



Critical Thinking as a Core Competency

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a central element of the International Baccalaureate and promotes what defines modern education: reflective thinking, perspective-taking, and judgment. In TOK lessons, students intensively explore how knowledge is created, how it is justified, and what role culture, language, and academic disciplines play in this process.

They learn to compare different ways of knowing, critically question arguments, and establish connections between individual subjects. TOK strengthens the ability to categorize complex issues and think independently – a key competence for university studies, professional life, and social participation in an international world.



Personal Growth, Taking Responsibility

CAS accompanies students throughout the entire Diploma Programme and complements academic instruction with practical experiences outside the classroom. The goal is to strengthen young people in their personal development and empower them to act actively and responsibly.

In the Creativity component, students implement their own creative projects; in the Activity component, the focus is on movement, sporting challenges, and physical activity. Service promotes social engagement and active participation in the community. Projects are planned, documented, and reflected upon independently and are supervised by a specially trained CAS coordinator.

CAS is not a traditional subject but a conscious learning space for self-organization, commitment, and social responsibility – competencies that play a central role in international studies and later professional life.

Academic Work at University Level

The Extended Essay is an independently written academic paper on a freely chosen topic from an IB subject area. Students develop their own research question, conduct independent research, analyze materials, and structure their findings according to academic standards.

Accompanied by a supervising teacher, they learn to thoroughly understand complex content, present arguments precisely, and critically reflect on their own learning process. The Extended Essay specifically prepares students for the demands of university studies and imparts academic working methods as expected at universities in Germany and worldwide.
